Odisha CM Announces Special Police Wing For Offences Against Women & Children

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday announced creation of a special wing in Odisha Police to look after the offences against women and children.

Addressing the valedictory session of the the 62nd Senior Police Officers’ Conference, 2020, the chief minister said crime against women and children remains the focus area of the state government. With the formation of the special wing, he hoped that quality services would be provided to the women and children.

“The government is aware of need for strengthening civil police in view of increasing demands on the police services. Six new police stations are being made functional from today and further 905 additional posts in various ranks have been sanctioned for strengthening police stations,” he said.

Expressing his satisfaction over the law and order situation in the state in 2020, he commended the overall efforts of Odisha Police in handling the COVID-19 pandemic situation with compassion and empathy. He also paid homage to the police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Stating that the LWE problem is dynamic in nature and keeps changing, he said close monitoring and focused efforts should continue. He commend the works of Malkangiri and Kandhamal SPS in this connection.

Naveen also congratulated the police for the effective drive against narcotic drugs with the STF taking the lead. “I am told that in this drive, a record quantity of narcotics has been seized. Commendable work has been done by DIG, STF and SP, Koraput,” he said.

Expressing concern over very high fatalities due to road accidents in the state, he said there is need to take up preventive and enforcement initiatives as well as public awareness campaign in coordination with other stakeholders like Transport and Works department to bring down such fatalities.
