Kolkata: With the second phase of West Bengal assembly elections underway on Thursday, the focus was very much on Nandigram where chief minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting against former aide Suvendu Adhikari of BJP.

There were complaints and counter-complaints from Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP as incidents of sporadic violence trickled in.

The chief minister visited a polling booth in the afternoon on receiving complaints and called up Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to allege that many voters were not being allowed to vote.

“They didn’t allow the local people to cast their vote. From morning I am campaigning… Now I am appealing to you, please see,” the chief minister was quoted as saying by ANI.

Nandigram is among 30 constituencies that is voting on Thursday. There will be six more phases this month, ahead of vote counting on May 2.

The Governor rersponded to Mamata’s call by promising to look into the matter.

“Issues flagged @MamataOfficial a while ago on phone have been imparted to the concerned. There is full assurance of the concerned to adherence to rule of law. Am confident all will act in right spirit and earnestness so that democracy flourishes,” Dhankar tweeted.
