New Delhi: An AIIMS New Delhi study among people who tested COVID-positive after getting vaccinated has revealed there was no fatality.

A total of 63 persons — 41 males and 22 females — took part in the study, which was conducted during the peak of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, during April-May.

Their ages ranged from 21 to 92 years, and none of the 63 had any comorbidity.

Ten individuals were administered Covishield, while 53 received Covaxin. Two doses were administered on 36 people, and 27 received one dose of either COVID vaccine.

“Viral load at the time of diagnosis was high in all the patients irrespective of vaccination status or type of vaccine received and the initial course of disease with high-grade non-remitting fever lasted for five to seven days in the vaccinated group, similar to the clinical presentation in unvaccinated patients,” the report said.

The study found that in case of people contracting coronavirus infection despite being fully or partly vaccinated, the two COVID-19 variants of concern were B.1.617.2 and B.1.1.7.

“While antibody levels for a subset of patients were available, they became infected nevertheless and presented to the emergency just like other patients, putting in doubt the protection offered and or clinical relevance of total immunoglobulin G (IgG) as a surrogate of COVID-19 immunity,” the report added.
