Tokyo: The Indian women’s hockey team missed the bronze by a whisker despite a gallant fight at Tokyo Olympics on Friday.
India lost the match for the bronze medal against Great Britain 3-4.
Goalkeeper Savita was the star in the first quarter, saving two penalty corners, and three field goals attempts. Drag flicker Gurjit Kaur came to the party in the second quarter.
Great Britain scored two quick goals at the start of the second quarter, but Gurjit again helped India level the game by converting another penalty corner drag-flick. Katariya Vandana Katariya added a third goal to the scorecard, putting India in the lead in the dying moments of the second quarter.
However, the team could not maintain the lead for long as Hollie Pearne-Webb scored a goal to level the scores in the third quarter.
India and Great Britain were 3-3 even at end of the fourth quarter. With 12 minutes remaining, Grace Balsdon scored the fourth goal for Great Britain through a penalty corner to eventually seal the match.
India fumbled in the mid-field as the players tried hard to take the match to the shoot-out. A last-minute attempt to get a penalty corner was also turned down.
