New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday approved imposition of Governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir, with an immediate effect.

This comes a day after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pulled out of its alliance with Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

After consulting all the political parties, governor NN Vohra had forwarded a report to President Kovind, last evening, for imposing Governor’s rule in J&K under Section 92 of the Constitution. It is for the fourth time in the last 10 years that Governor’s rule is being imposed in the North Indian state.

The saffron party broke the alliance after its chief Amit Shah held a meeting with the party’s Jammu and Kashmir cabinet ministers in New Delhi on Tuesday.

After the state elections threw up a hung house, both the parties had formed a coalition government in 2015. The parties, however, were divided on a variety of issues ideologically.

NN Vohra will now be running the state for a fourth time since his appointment in 2008.

“The governor received a letter by fax, jointly signed by Ravinder Raina and Kavinder Gupta, state BJP president and leader of BJP Legislature Party respectively, about withdrawing BJP’s support to the coalition government,” a Raj Bhawan spokesperson said.

The PDP has 28 seats, while BJP had 25 in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.
