Heavy Rain Brings Life To Standstill In Mumbai

Mumbai: Most roads in Mumbai have turned into pools of water following incessant  rain for the fourth consecutive day. This has affected traffic on the roads and train services.

Heavy rain continued to lash Thane and Kalyan on Tuesday. A fatal accident and cracks on Saket bridge, along the Bhiwandi bypass on Mumbai-Nashik Highway, led to massive traffic jams and severely disrupted road commute between Kalyan and Thane.

Some trains have also been cancelled while others are running late as tracks are waterlogged after heavy overnight rain.

Schools of Thane and Palghar have also declared holiday because of the rain. The school principals in Mumbai have been asked to assess the situation in their areas and take a call on closure of schools, Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde tweeted.

On Monday, Mumbai received five times the average rainfall for this season. The Met department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain till Thursday.

Mumbai was hit with 144.47 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs got 107.21 mm and the western suburbs received 131.32 mm till Tuesday morning.
