SC Upholds Validity Of 10% Reservation For Poor
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the 103rd Constitution Amendment providing 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections (EWS) persons from unreserved categories in education and government jobs.
A five-judge constitution bench of Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justices Dinesh Maheshwari, S Ravindra Bhat, Bela M Trivedi and JB Pardiwala held that the provisions of the Amendment are not in violation of the Constitution.
On September 27, the top court reserved the verdict after hearing a battery of senior lawyers, including the then Attorney General K K Venugopal and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, in the marathon hearing that had lasted for six-and-half-day.
As many as 40 petitions, including the lead one filed by ‘Janhit Abhiyan’ in 2019, were filed challenging its validity.
