Court Sentences Man To 20-Year RI For Rape Of Minor Girl In Odisha’s Mayurbhanj

Baripada: A POCSO court has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for rape of a minor girl last year in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.

As per the case, the culprit, Ghana Nayak of a village under Badampahad police station had committed the crime in April last year. While the minor girl was alone in her house, Ghana, who is her neighbour, took advantage of it and went to her house.

After the girl let him inside the house without suspecting his intentions, Ghana raped her and threatened her not to disclose it to anybody. But the girl informed her parents about the incident. On the basis of the complaint filed by the girl’s parents, police registered a case and arrested Ghana.

After hearing the case and witnesses and evidence produced by police, additional district judge of special POCSO court convicted Ghana for the crime on Wednesday. Announcing its order on Thursday, the court sentenced Ghana to 20-year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on him. In case of no-payment of the penalty, h would have to undergo additional 6-month imprisonment.

The court also directed the State Legal Services Authority to pay a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family of the victim.
