Mall Sealed, Slapped With Rs 1 Lakh Fine For Dumping Waste In Drain In Odisha Capital

Bhubaneswar: A shopping mall near ISKCON temple in Odisha capital was sealed on Friday for allegedly dumping waste in a nearby natural drainage channel. It has also been slapped with a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

According to sources, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) had warned the mall authorities thrice against littering and throwing waste into the drain, which flows across NH-16 and ends at the temple. “The national highway in front of the temple gets waterlogged during monsoon. If waste is thrown into the drain, it will choke leading to severe waterlogging. The mall authorities should behave responsibly in future,” said a BMC officer.

The mall, which allegedly handled waste in violation of its solid waste management rules, will remain closed for a week.

On February 26, the civic body had imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on a private health facility at Saheed Nagar here for allegedly littering hazardous bio-medical waste.
