Berhampur University Convocation In Odisha: Call For Blending Ancient Culture & Modern Methods
Berhampur: Educational institutions in Odisha as well as the country can be transformed into citadel of excellence and wisdom by inheriting the culture of ancient universities, eminent persons said on Wednesday.
Speaking at Berhampur University’s 24th convocation, they felt that more and more students must be attracted to the tuned academic environment of these universities in their pursuit of knowledge.
The convocation was held at the Biju Patnaik Auditorium in Bhanja Bihar campus.
Governor Ganeshi Lal, who is Chancellor of state-run varsities in Odisha, stressed on learning the secrets of life and cited examples from Ramayan and Mahabharat.
NEP-2020 aims to bring a total transformation in the education system in the country. It is built on the pillars of access, equity, quality, affordability and accountability. This policy aims to create a new system aligned with the global aspirational goals of 21st century education while remaining consistent with India’s tradition and value system, said the Governor.
Speaking at the event Justice Satrughana Pujahari, Chairperson Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC), said our ancient universities including Nalanda and Takshyasila dominated by Vedic and Buddhist scholars attracted many including Hieun Tsang during 5th and 6th century. Even it eclipsed the medieval universities of Europe.
Though some of the universities were established in India in 1857 during British rule, their role was much different from our ancient universities. In the post-independent period we are having 1100 universities in India including 20 in Odisha in government or private sector. But they are yet to establish themselves as the institute of excellence, he said.
Bishnupada Sethi, Principal, Secretary Higher Education, said that people must be ready for a change. Education sector has seen an extraordinary transition.
Berhampur University Vice Chancellor Prof Geetanjali Dash in her welcome address said this institution has produced great alumni during 57 years of its existence who have succeeded across the global spectrum. We have left no stone unturned in nurturing young minds to exhibit resilience and competitiveness, the VC said.
On this occasion 8 D Litt, 2 D Sc and 70 PhD scholars were awarded their degrees and 45 gold medals have been conferred to students in different subjects. Members of the Syndicate, Academic Council, Deans of Faculties, professors and faculty members of different departments and officers of the university, officials of the district administration and students of different departments were present during the convocation.
