Bhubaneswar: An elderly woman of Odisha capital was allegedly duped of around Rs 18 lakh by fraudsters on the pretext of giving her insurance money with additional benefits.
Acting on a complaint lodged by the woman at Laxmisagar police station in Bhubaneswar on March 2, a thorough investigation was launched and two accused persons were arrested from New Delhi, a senior police official said.
The woman, identified as Jasaswini Das, had a policy with a private insurance company and it was about to mature. She received a phone call recently from a man who identified himself as a senior officer of the insurance company.
The man told the woman that she would get 75 per cent extra bonus if she opted for another policy. Thereafter, the man swindled nearly Rs 18 lakh in multiple installments from the woman on different pretexts. Finally, she got suspicious and lodged the complaint with the police.
After investigation, it was found that the money paid by the woman had been deposited in a bank account in Delhi. A special team visited Delhi and arrested two persons. While Vikas Singh is the principal accused, Akash Mukherjee was assisting him, police said.
Cash of 2.38 lakh , six mobile phones, nine sim cards, two bank pass books, a laptop, pen drive and several credit & debit cards have been seized from the accused and further investigation is underway, the police added.
