Sambalpur: Amid fresh violence in Odisha’s arson-hit Sambalpur, the district administration imposed curfew in many parts of the city while the ban on internet services was extended for two more days on Saturday.

As tension prevailed in city which was rocked by fresh violence, curfew was claimed for an indefinite period in many areas under the jurisdiction of six police stations as a precautionary measure. Sources said the curfew restrictions will remain in force till further orders and the situation is being reviewed regularly.

The district authorities imposed curfew curbs in a bit to ensure peace and tranquility in areas under Town Police Station, Dhanupali Police Station, Khetrajpur PS, Ainthapali PS, Bareipali PS and Sadar Police Station of Sambalpur.

It may be noted here that the western Odisha city witnessed widespread violence and a clash between two groups during a rally ahead of Hanuman Janmotsav. While at least ten policemen sustained injuries, several vehicles were allegedly damaged and some shops were set on fire.

In view of the prevailing situation, the authorities extended the ban on the internet services in the city for another 48 hours. The prohibition on the use and access of internet and data services including WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media was extended for another 48 hours up to 10 am of April 17.

Noting that curfew restrictions were claimed to step up efforts to restore normalcy, Sambalpur collector Ananya Das said the curbs would help intensify patrolling in sensitive areas.

Nobody will be allowed to leave their houses during the curfew period. People are allowed to do their esstntial work during two windows, from 8 am to 10 am and from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. All the commercial and educational institutions will remain closed. Only people will be allowed to buy groceries and other essential items during the relaxation period, she said.

People should use the relaxation period only to purchase essential articles. A helpline number has also been issued to assist people in emergency medical situations.

The collector also appealed to the public not to believe in rumours and asked them to immediately report to their nearest police station if they come across any rumour.

Strict action will be taken against mischief-mongers indulging in spreading rumours, she said, adding that around 95 per cent of rumours are false and people must remain cautious and vigilant.

For any medical emergencies a helpline is hereby declared. Citizens may reach out the District Headquarters Hospital helpline No.7655800760, sources read.

Strict action as per law would be initiated against the violators of curfew restrictions, a senior police official said.
