Heatwave In Odisha: Mercury Soars Past 40°C In Jharsuguda & Bhubaneswar Before Noon
Bhubaneswar: With heatwave continuing to sweep Odisha, the mercury soared past 40 degree Celsius in Jharsuguda and Bhubaneswar before noon, the regional meteorological centre informed on Thursday.
Jharsuguda was the hottest at 41.4 degree Celsius followed by Bhubaneswar at 40.2 degree Celsius, Chandbali and Keonjhar at 39.6 degree Celsius each and Balasore and Sambalpur at 38.6 degree Celsius each by 11.30 am.
At 8.30 am, Jharsuguda had recorded 34 degree Celsius and Keonjhar 33.6 degree Celsius.
The day also saw 32 girls of a government school hostel falling ill due to severe heatwave conditions in Koida area of Odisha’s Sundargarh district.
On Wednesday, 11 places experienced extreme heat with the mercury soaring past 43 degree Celsius on Wednesday. Baripada in Mayurbhanj was the hottest at 44.5 degree Celsius.

The MeT office has sounded heatwave warning for some places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur and Boudh during the next 24 hours.
On April 22-23, several districts in the state is likely to experience thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40kmph under the influence of a fresh western disturbance. Rain will also be more widespread from these days. Following which, the mercury level will gradually fall by 2 to 4 degrees, it added.

In view of the prevailing heatwave condition, the state government has also preponed summer vacation and it will begin from April 21.
