New Delhi: The Supreme Court, in a rare 8 pm hearing on Friday, stayed Calcutta High Court Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s order directing the Secretary General of the apex court to produce before him the report and official translation of his media interview and the affidavit of Registrar General of the high court in original by 12 midnight today, India Today reported.
The report and interview given by Justice Gangopadhyay to a Bengali news channel was submitted to the Chief of Justice of India on his order.
Based on those documents, the Supreme Court earlier today directed Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court to reassign the West Bengal teachers’ recruitment case from Justice Gangopadhyay to another judge.
Justice Gangopadhyay, who had directed Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to question Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, spoke about the case that he was hearing during the said interview, which the top court objected to.
Following the Supreme Court ruling, Justice Gangopadhyay said he will wait in his high court chamber till 12.15 am (Saturday) to receive the two sets of document which were placed before the judges of the Supreme Court.
That, however, didn’t materialise.
