New Delhi: The Minister of State for Education and External Affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2023 this morning.

IIT-Madras and IISc Bangalore emerged the top educational institutes in the country. IISC, JNU, and Jamia Millia Islamia are the top 3 institutions in the universities category of the NIRF Rankings 2023.

In 2022, there were only four categories: Overall, Colleges, Universities, and Research Institutions, and seven subject domains: Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, Architecture, and Dental. However, this year, NIRF has added one new discipline – Agriculture and Allied Sectors. Additionally, the architecture discipline has been renamed as ‘Architecture and Planning’.

“It gives me immense joy to share that IIT Madras has yet again emerged as a topper in the Overall and Engineering categories of the National Institute Rankings Framework 2023 conducted by the Union Ministry of Education. This is just a reinforcement of our efforts to be recognised as a global leader in research and education and it gives me pride that we are on track on the Strategic Plan outlined for IIT Madras.  All this has been made possible by the tireless efforts of the outstanding quality of faculty and students of the institute, staff who have contributed significantly to the institute’s continuous progress, and unwavering support from our alumni across the world. I also thank the Ministry of Education, Government of India and the Tamil Nadu State Government who have reposed their trust in us. We look forward to being of service to the community and the nation. We will continue to take all necessary action to make IIT Madras a locally relevant and globally recognised institute, ” said Prof V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras.

What are the parameters of NIRF Rankings?

The ranking framework judges institutions under five broad generic groups of parameters of Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception (PR). Ranks are assigned based on the total sum of marks assigned for each of these five broad groups of parameters.

What is NIRF Ranking?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched in 2015.  “This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception’,” the official website states.
