CBI Seeks 5-Day Remand For 3 Accused In Triple Train Accident In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The CBI has sought 5-day remand of three persons, arrested for their alleged involvement in triple train accident at Bahanaga Bazaar railway station in Odisha’s Balasore district, from the court.

The CBI arrested Arun Kumar Mohanta senior section engineer (SSE), Signal, Balasore; Mohammad Amir Khan, SSE (Signal), Soro and Pappu Kumar Technician, Balasore earlier in the day. They have been charged under Sections 304 and 201 of CrPC and Section 153 of Railways Act, 1989 in the ongoing investigation into the case, a CBI press release stated.

Following the arrest, the three accused were brought to the CBI office at Bhubaneswar in the evening. After a brief stay in the CBI office, they were taken to Capital Hospital in the city amid strong security for medical check-up.

Following the medical check-up, the accused were produced before the Bhubaneswar Special CBI Court where the Central agency sought their remand for 5 days for further investigation.

The CBI has found the three Railway officials, who were in their posts at the time of the accident, responsible for causing the accident. Besides, they have been charged with attempt to hide the evidence.

It may be noted that as many as 293 people were killed and 1,200 others injured in one of the worst train accidents in the country. Two superfast trains – Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and Bengaluru-Howrah Express – and a goods train were involved in a rare collision on the night of June 2.
