Rourkela: A contractual forest personnel was trampled to death by an elephant in Kuanrmunda range of Rourkela Forest Division late on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Pati Dhir. He was in the team engaged to drive away a herd of five elephants, which had strayed into human habitation.
According to reports, one of the elephants had stayed put in a nearby forest and attacked Dhir at night, killing him on the spot.
Enraged over the incident, locals gheraoed other forest personnel and detained the body. They alleged that the elephants had been wreaking havoc in the locality for past few days and demanded concrete measures to keep them away from human settlements.
Administrative officials have rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation, reports added.
