New Delhi: Three days after being expelled from Lok Sabha in connection with the cash-for-query case, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra approached the Supreme Court.
The MP from West Bengal’s Krishnanagar stated in her petition that the decision to expel her was “illegal”.
Moitra’s expulsion was formalised on December 8 after the House adopted the report of its Ethics Committee which found her guilty of accepting gifts and illegal gratification from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to further his interest.
Moitra, who has all through denied the allegations, hit out at the ethics committee for “acting without proof” and charged that it was becoming a “weapon” to “bulldoze” the Opposition.
She alleged that the Ethics Committee “broke every rule in the book,” claiming that she was not given a chance to defend herself in the House when the report was taken up.
She also complained that she was not able to cross-examine her estranged partner and Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who brought the ‘cash-for-query’ allegation against her.
