Visakhapatnam: Two outstanding individual performances have given India the upper hand in the second Test against England.

After India rode Yashasvi Jaiswal’s magnificent 209 to a first-innings total of 396, Jasprit Bumrah produced a masterclass with the ball (6/45) to dismiss England for 253.

In the second innings, India moved quickly to 28 without loss at stumps on Day 2, for an overall lead of 171 runs. Yashasvi and Rohit Sharma hit three crisp boundaries each to be unbeaten on 15 and 13, respectively.

Yashasvi resumed on 179 this morning and cruised to his maiden double century with a six and a four off Shoaib Bashir.

At 22 years and 37 days, the left-handed Yashasvi, became the third youngest Indian – after Vinod Kambli and Sunil Gavaskar — to hit a double hundred in the longest format of the game.

Playing only his sixth Test match, Yashasvi scored at a quick pace as his 209 came off 290 balls. His seven-hour knock included 19 fours and seven sixes.

England, true to their style, got off to a brisk start as they scored at well over 5 runs an over.

Kuldeep Yadav provided India their first breakthrough, having Ben Duckett caught at silly point.

Zack Crawley stroked freely and looked ominous as he and first-Test hero Ollie Pope carried England to 114/1 before a brilliant catch by Shreyas Iyer jolted England. Running back from point, Iyer dived and pouched a mistimed shot from Crawley.

Bumrah then took over. Getting the ball to swing at pace, he dismissed Joe Root for the eighth time as the former England captain edged one to Shubman Gill at slip.

A swinging yorker sent two stumps of Pope flying.

Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes were also left bamboozled by Bumrah, who later cleaned up the tail to bag his 10th five-wicket haul.

Kuldeep turned out to be a handful as well, finishing with 3/71, while Gill supported the bowlers by taking four good catches.

BRIEF SCORES

India first innings — 396 in 112 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 209; Jimmy Anderson 3/47, Rehan Ahmed 3/65, Shoaib Bashir 3/138).

England first innings – 253 in 55.5 overs (Zack Crawley 76, Ben Stokes 47; Jasprit Bumrah 6/45, Kuldeep Yadav 3/71).

India second innings – 28/0 in 5 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal batting 15, Rohit Sharma batting 13).

Match to continue on Day 3, India lead by 171 runs.
