Mumbai: Having lost his wife after their scooter was hit from behind by a BMW at Worli here on Sunday morning, Pradip Nakhva demanded harsh punishment for the culprit.
Still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, an angry Nakhva vowed to “drag the driver” in the same way that his wife was “dragged.”
The car was being driven allegedly by 24-year-old Mihir Shah, the son of Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leader Rajesh Shah.
The Nakhva couple was coming back from Crawford Market after purchasing fish when their scooter was hit from behind by a speeding BMW at around 5.30 am.
They were rushed to a hospital, where his wife succumbed to her injuries.
Nakhva said that his wife could have been saved if the driver had “shown some humanity” and pulled up, reported PTI.
“We were riding at a speed of 30-35 kilometres per hour when a speeding car hit us from behind. I fell on the car’s bonnet, and Kaveri fell on my back, not sustaining grave injury initially. Had the driver shown some humanity and stopped the car, my wife would have been alive today,” Nakhva recounted the incident at Worli police station.
When the brake was applied, Nakhva fell off the vehicle but his wife was trapped under the front wheel.
“I tried to stop the car by banging the bonnet, but the driver did not stop and dragged my wife on the bonnet from Ceejay House towards Sea Link,” Nakhva said.
He took a taxi to look for his wife. Not finding her, he went to Worli police station and found out that she had been taken to Nair Hospital.
“My wife will never come back, but he should get the strictest punishment,” said the aggrieved husband.
The couple, from the fishermen community, has been living in Nakhwa House, in Shankar temple area of Worli Koliwada, for years.
Their son Yash recently got a job and the family was planning a holiday. They also have a daughter.
“Kaveri loved our son so much. He came home from work in the morning. I didn’t know how to tell him about his mother’s death,” Nakhva lamented.
