Delhi/Kullu/Kedarnath: The national capital recorded more than a hundred millimetres of rainfall in barely an hour on Thursday, leading to waterlogging in several areas. The city had also witnessed heavy rain on Wednesday evening, prompting the weather office to issued a ‘red’ warning. All schools will remain shut in Delhi today (August 1). As many as 10 people died as a result of rain-related incidents, five in Delhi, three in Gurugram and two in Greater Noida, according to a NDTV report.

The Pragati Maidan observatory in central Delhi recorded 112.5 mm of rainfall in just one hour, according to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Automatic Weather Station (AWS) network.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Wednesday instructed officials to remain alert in light of the ongoing heavy rain.
“Have cautioned all officers to remain alert in light of the ongoing heavy downpour in Delhi. Apart from ensuring minimum inconvenience to people in general, they are advised to specifically address issues at sites prone to waterlogging, including coaching centres,” he wrote on X.

10 flights diverted

Heavy rain had caused widespread waterlogging in the city, including Lutyen’s Delhi, Kashmere Gate, Rajinder Nagar, Qutub Minar area, etc on Wednesday evening. Vehicles navigated through flooded streets. At least 10 flights were diverted from Delhi between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm on Wednesday due to bad weather.

‘At least 200 pilgrims stranded in Kedarnath’

A cloudburst in Kedarnath on Wednesday night caused significant damage. It led to a sharp rise in the Mandakini River’s water level in Sonprayag. Emergency services, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), district police, and local officials, were put on high alert as reports of cloudburst surfaced in the Lincholi area. According to media reports, 150 to 200 pilgrims may be stranded in Kedarnath.

At least 36 people went missing after a cloudburst in Shimla’s Samej area. According to reports, the disaster management authority had received information about a cloudburst near a hydroelectric power project at Samej Khad on Thursday. A disaster management team was rushed to the site.

Cloudburst incidents have reportedly struck Thaltukhod in Mandi. While person died, 9 individuals went missing. The calamity also resulted in significant damage to houses. Deputy Commissioner Mandi, Apoorv Devgan, said the district administration and NDRF teams were deployed in the affected area.

Himachal Pradesh Minister Jagat Singh Negi said: “So far 36 people have been reported missing in Samej area of ​​Shimla district. Similarly, 8 people are missing in Tikken area of ​​Mandi, 2 bodies have been recovered, 1 is injured. In the Kullu area, the barrage of the power project in Malana has been breached, so people are also stranded, the road connectivity is currently closed. The Chief Minister has called an emergency meeting… many bridges have been damaged…”
