Odisha’s SCB MCH Conducts Second Successful Living Donor Liver Transplant

Bhubaneswar: The second living donor liver transplant was successfully conducted by a team of doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, on Monday.

“The liver transplant was conducted by a team led by General Surgeon and Nodal Officer of SCB MCH’s Liver Transplant Unit Rajesh Kumar Dora with the help from Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Hyderabad led by renowned liver transplant surgeon Dr P Balachandran Menon,” Dean & Principal Dr Lucy Das told the media.

The liver was transplanted on to a 39-year-old patient from Nayagarh district, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital for three months. His wife donated part of her liver for transplant. The condition of both the donor and the recipient is stable after the critical procedure, and they have been shifted to the ICU and will be under close observation for the next one month, hospital authorities said.

Menon said that this was the second successful transplantation in Eastern India. “It is among the few government facility to have conducted this challenging surgery and technically very demanding. It is one of the main advancements in medical science in recent times,” he added.

The first ever complex liver transplantation was conducted on a patient with end-stage liver disease at the Odisha’s premier medical institution in May this year when 35-year-old wife of the middle-aged patient donated 60 per cent of her liver to her husband.
