Baripada: A local court has sentenced a man to imprisonment for 20 years for rape of a minor girl in Odisha’s Mayconurbhanj district.
As per the case, the convict and his accomplice forcibly took the 15-year-old girl of a village under Bisoi police station in the district from her house while she was sleeping with her grandmother on the night of July 8, 2017.
They went to a nearby forest and both of them raped the girl there. The villagers rescued the girl from the forest next day and informed the police.
Later, the police arrested the convict while his accomplice managed to escape. Following investigation, the police filed the chargesheet in the court.
After hearing the statements of the girl and 18 witnesses and examining the evidence, special judge Santosh Kumar Nayak of fast-track court sentenced the convict to jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.
The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the victim, Special Public Prosecutor Manoranjan Pattnaik said.
