Bhubaneswar: Even as 300 truckloads of potatoes from Uttar Pradesh arrived in Odisha to solve the tuber crisis, the officials of Supply department carried out raids on different markets in twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on Monday.
According to sources, the Supply officials conducted raids on shops and godowns at Chhatra Bazaar in Cuttack and Unit IV market in Bhubaneswar. They ascertained the rate of potatoes sold by the traders and the stock kept by them.
Civil Supply Officer Rajalakshmi Patra said the people were buying more potatoes in apprehension of price rise while there was enough stock of the vegetable in the market.
The supply officials were telling the traders to sell the potatoes at the rate of Rs 40 per kg. Anybody found charging higher rate would be issued notice, she said adding that if the trader continued to flout the government regulated rate, stringent action would be taken against him.
Earlier in the morning, the Supply department received the information that potatoes were being sold at Rs 50 per kg in the market of Chhatra Bazaar. This led the department to conduct raids to keep the prices under check, the sources said.
