Mumbai: Oppression and crime against women continue to haunt and hurt India.
In an incident that takes us back to the dark ages, a man in Maharashtra’s Parbhani set his wife on fire for giving birth to their third daughter.
The accused, identified as 32-year-old Kundlik Uttam Kale, poured petrol on his wife Maina in Gangakhed Naka, around 520 kilometres from Mumbai, a police officer said on Saturday.
Kale has been arrested on charges of murder, a Gangakhed police station official informed.
The victim’s sister said in a complaint to Mumbai police that Kale used to taunt his wife over giving birth to three daughters and would frequently pick fights, blaming her for not conceiving a boy.
On Thursday night, the accused allegedly poured petrol on Maina and set her ablaze, the complaint stated.
The woman died while she was being taken to a hospital.
“On Thursday night, after one such argument, he poured petrol on her and set her ablaze. She ran out of the house screaming and people tried to douse the fire. However, by then she was severely burnt and died while being rushed to a hospital,” PTI quoted the official as saying.
