Bhubaneswar: In order to identify and penalise the owners of the vehicles not having insurance, the Odisha government will start an automated system at toll plazas cross the state.

Under the system, if any vehicle would be found not having valid insurance coverage, e-challans would be automatically sent to its owner. Then, the Transport department would start the legal action against the offender.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act, insurance coverage is mandatory for all vehicles. Violation of the Act would attract a fine of Rs 2,000 or a jail term upto three months or both. Repeat offences would lead to a fine of Rs 4,000 along with imprisonment.

It may be noted that the department had detected violation of various traffic norms including speed limit, fitness certificate and tax dues through automated system. The additional provision is meant to ensure compensation to the families in case of any mishap involving he vehicles.
