Mumbai: Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national who had illegally entered India and had been living under the false name of Bijoy Das, was arrested for attack on Saif Ali Khan during a burglary attempt. But how did the police traced him down? The accused, police found, had been hiding in a thicket on a deserted road in Thane, reported the NDTV. Police first surrounded him from all sides and then arrested him.
The cops had formed 30 teams to track down the accused. They scanned CCTV footage of the building in Bandra where the Saif Ali Khan, his wife and actor Kareena Kapoor Khan and their sons live and the attack took place.
The cops found that the suspect left the building after the attack. Police then scanned several hours of footage from across the city as it also launched a manhunt for the accused. During this tedious exercise, they found a footage captured by a CCTV camera in DN Nagar in Andheri, reported NDTV. In this video, the suspect was seen getting off the bike. This helped cops to track down the two-wheeler using its number.
The cops also used local intelligence inputs. These clues helped cops to zero in on a rented accommodation at Koliwada in Worli. Cops claimed that the accused lived with three others in the Worli place, NDTV reported, quoting sources. A police team went to this accommodation. They questioned the people living there. They managed to get the suspect’s name and other relevant information. Police also got his phone number from questioning others. The number helped cops track his phone location, leading to his arrest.
Police have said they did not find any Indian document from Shariful. However, cops had evidence of his Bangladeshi origin.
What did the accused say?
According to reports, Shariful had told cops that he did not know that he was breaking into Saif Ali Khan’s home. The accused has told police that he used the rear staircase and air-conditioning ducts to get inside the building, NDTV reported.
