New Delhi: Parliament’s Budget session resumed Monday morning amid chaos after opposition Lok Sabha MPs shouted slogans, demanding discussion on stampede at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj last week, in which 30 people were killed. As the Irate MPs rushed towards the Well of the House, they were heard shouting: “Kumbh pe jawab do”. They also demanded Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s resignation and a list of those killed in the stampede. They have accused the state government of hiding the actual number of deaths.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla called for order, who looked disgruntled, accused the opposition of not wanting the House to function. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also urged the MPs to let the House function. Birla called out one of the protesting politicians – Pradyut Bordoloi, the Congress MP from Assam’s Nowgong, and said, “People send you to Parliament to ask questions.. not break tables. If that is what you want to do, then hit it harder… break it.”

Rajya Sabha MPs also protested against the stampede with sloganeering and later staged a walk-out. Congress RS MP Pramod Tiwari told reporters, “We walked out for an hour. We will go back again and raise this issue. We are getting calls…people are not able to meet families. We want to know why the list of 30 dead has not been released.”

SC junks plea seeking action against UP officials

The Supreme Court on Monday (February 3) refused to entertain a PIL seeking action against Uttar Pradesh state officials for the stampede, reported the LiveLaw.

The Court asked the petitioner, Advocate Vishal Tiwari, to move the Allahabad High Court. “It is an unfortunate incident, something which is of concern. but go to the High Court. There is already a judicial commission constituted,” CJI told Tiwari.
