Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday paid tributes to former CM Biju Patnaik at the statue of the legendary leader of Odisha in the state Assembly premises on the occasion of his 109th birth anniversary.

“To develop Odisha, Late Biju Patnaik introduced a new vision and made significant contributions, such as advancing the Paradip port…His dream was to bring Odisha to the forefront…” he told the media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to the former CM, fondly known as Biju Babu. “Remembering Biju Babu on his birth anniversary. We fondly recall his contribution towards Odisha’s development and empowering people. He was also staunchly committed to democratic ideals, strongly opposing the Emergency,” he wrote.

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Naveen Patnaik paid floral tributes at the statue of the former CM and his father at the Forest Park.

Recalling his father’s role in strengthening the Panchayati Raj system and empowering women, he also wrote on X: “I pay my tributes to the great leader, former Chief Minister, and legendary Biju Patnaik. His bravery and contributions in making Odisha a leading state continue to inspire us. We remain committed to safeguarding the interests and self-esteem of the people of Odisha.”

Notably, Biju Patnaik has become the latest flashpoint between BJP and the Opposition with the Mohan Mjahi government’s decision to shift the Panchayati Raj Diwas from Biju Jayanti on March 5 to April 24, when it is observed across the country, scrapping the public holiday on this day. The BJD has also threatened to launch a statewide agitation from March 6, alleging that it is an affront to the legacy of Biju Patnaik.
