Murshidabad: Troops of the South Bengal Frontier, Border Security Force (BSF) arrested a Bangladeshi smuggler and seized 3.387 kg heroin, valued at nearly Rs 6,77,400 along the Indo-Bangladesh Border in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, on Friday.
“Troops of the Pirojpur BOP acted on intelligence inputs that mentioned an attempt to smuggle narcotics across the international border from the Sadamachar area. Around 4 pm, the troops spotted two men approaching the border from the Indian side. On being challenged, the two panicked and fled after dropping some packets in the dense bushes nearby. The alert BSF jawans gave chase and succeeded in apprehending one of them,” a senior BSF official said.
Five packets, with some brown substance inside, were found during a thorough search. Samples were immediately sent for tests. The results revealed that the brown substance is heroin.
“The arrested man says that he is a Bangladeshi and has been involved in smuggling for quite some time. On Friday, an Indian contact handed him the packets, to be carried across the border. They were to be handed over to another contact in Bangladesh. He was promised some money for this job. We have handed him over, along with the drugs to the concerned department,” the official said.
He claimed that this successful operation will deal a heavy blow to drug trafficking syndicates, operating along the international border. While giving all credit to the troops, he said that crime along the vital border has been kept under check due to their tireless efforts.
