Panaji: Four days after his suspension, an FIR was registered against Pranav Naik, an assistant professor in the Department of Physics, University of Goa, on charges of trespassing, cheating and forgery with the intent to cheat. The complaint at the Agassaim police station in Goa was made by S N Dhuri, the registrar of the University, on Saturday.

It has been alleged that Naik had an affair with a student and ‘stole’ an examination paper for her. According to Dhuri’s complaint, Naik allegedly got duplicate keys made, entered the cabins of several faculty members without their permission, thereby violating their privacy and security. He also allegedly helped a girl student cheat in an exam, degrading others, the complaint mentions.

The University had set up a fact finding committee that submitted its prima facie report, following which the complaint was lodged. The Executive Council of the University will meet on March 28 to discuss the report and decide on the next course of action.

According to the local media in Goa, the first police complaint was lodged by Kashinath Shetye, an activist, and others on March 16. This was followed by a complaint by complaints from the National Students Union of India and the Youth Congress.

Finally, after tremendous pressure from students and the public, the University suspended Naik on March 17.

The state government has also constituted a four-member committee headed by Justice (Retd) RMS Khandeparkar, Bosco George, former DIG, Goa, Radhika Nayak, former registrar, University of Goa and MRK Prasad, professor, V M Salgaocar College of Law. This committee is to submit its report at the earliest.
