Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, known for his sharp political satire, has found himself embroiled in legal trouble after multiple FIRs were filed against him in Maharashtra for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Seeking protection from arrest, Kamra approached the Madras High Court, which granted him interim anticipatory bail until April 7, directing him to furnish a bond in Tamil Nadu, where he has been residing since 2021.

Shiv Sena’s Warning: “Shiv Sena-Style Swagat”

Rahool Kanal, a leader of the Shiv Sena’s Yuva Sena (Shinde faction), responded to the court’s decision by issuing a veiled warning to Kamra. “We welcome the court’s order, but it is temporary. He should come to Mumbai and face the law,” Kanal said. “No matter what protection he has in Tamil Nadu, whenever he enters Maharashtra, he will be welcomed in true ‘Shiv Sena style.’”

When questioned whether this statement amounted to a threat, Kanal dismissed the notion, saying, “It’s not a threat. Mumbai has a culture of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ (Guest is God). If he respects the law, he has nothing to fear.” Kanal, who was previously arrested for vandalizing a Mumbai comedy studio where Kamra performed, emphasized that his party members follow legal procedures but remain firm in their stance.

Sanjay Raut Accuses Ministers of Issuing Death Threats

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, however, condemned the rhetoric against Kamra, alleging that ministers in the Maharashtra cabinet were openly calling for violence. “They are saying Kamra should be shot and hanged immediately. This is lawlessness, and CM Devendra Fadnavis is silent,” Raut claimed during a press conference.

Raut also demanded that Kamra be provided security, drawing a parallel with BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, who was given police protection during her feud with the previous Shiv Sena-led government. “If Kangana got security, why not Kamra? The government must ensure his safety,” he said.

Legal and Political Fallout

Kamra’s case has reignited debates over freedom of expression and political vendettas in Maharashtra. While his supporters argue that his comedy falls under satire, his critics accuse him of crossing legal boundaries. With the next court hearing on April 7, the standoff between Kamra and the ruling faction of Shiv Sena remains tense.

As the legal battle unfolds, the comedian’s future visits to Maharashtra could prove contentious, with political workers vowing a confrontational reception. The situation highlights the ongoing struggle between dissent and authority in India’s political landscape.
