Karachi: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently lodged in prison, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Members of Pakistan World Alliance (PWA) nominated Imran for his efforts to protect human rights and democracy.
The PWA, an advocacy group of Norwegian political party Partiet Sentrum founded in December 2024, announced the Imran’s nomination.
“We are pleased to announce on behalf of Partiet Sentrum that in alliance with somebody with the right to nominate, have nominated Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, to the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with human rights and democracy in Pakistan,” Partiet Sentrum said on X.
This is the second time that Imran, Pakistan’s only World Cup-winning cricket captain, has been nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. In 2019, he was nominated for the award for his efforts to resolve tensions with India. A resolution submitted in Pakistan’s Parliament stated then-Prime Minister Imran’s decision to release Indian Air Force pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was held captive in February 2019 after his plane was shot down inside Pakistani territory during the Balakot airstrikes.
The cricketer-turned-politician, who founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been in jail since August 2023 after being sentenced to 14 years in prison in a case related to corruption and misuse of authority.
