New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday said that steps are being taken to fill around 12,000 vacant posts in the state police to enhance efficiency in the force.

The CM made this announcement after a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. The recruitment drive aims at enhancing the law enforcement capacity in the state, he said.

Sources said Majhi attended a meeting chaired by the Union Home Minister in the North Block.  The discussion centred around law and order issues, with an emphasis on addressing the staffing gaps within the police forces.

“It was a routine review meeting between the Union Home Ministry and State Home Department. During today’s meeting we discussed on how the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) can be successfully implemented in Odisha with the proper coordination of the Union Home Ministry,” Majhi told reporters after the meeting.

Apart from highlighting the need to fill vacancies, the CM spoke on issues such as traffic management and cybercrime. The state government is making a concerted effort to address these issues, focusing on timely recruitment—a priority that, according to Majhi, had been neglected by the previous government.

He also highlighted that Maoist activities have been significantly diminished; now affecting only 10 districts of the state.  He expressed confidence that the menace would be completely eradicated by March 2026.

He said there was a shortfall in filling several vacant positions of police personnel including officials in the Home Department during the previous government and now steps are being taken to fill up the vacancies in an expeditious manner, said Majhi.

Stating that the government is set to fill up around 12,000 vacant positions in the police, the CM said these include 3003 post in Odisha Special Striking Force (OSSF), 3000 in Odisha Industrial Security Force (OISF), traffic police (2,000 posts), home guard (5,000 posts), prosecution cadre (267 posts), forensic (254 posts), and others.

The meeting also discussed how special arrangements like setting up of special traffic verticals can be made to check the road accidents. As more number of cyber crime cases are being reported, it has been decided to set up a total of 20 cyber police stations. Post of the Crime Scene Officer is being created at each police station, Majhi added.
