Jaipur: The Intelligence Department of Rajasthan Police have arrested a man for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s spy agency Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) for 12 years. Pathan Khan was taken into custody a month ago but was formally arrested on Thursday.
According to officials, they have come to know that Khan was passing sensitive information related to India’s border security to Pakistan since 2013.
“Upon receiving information from some internal sources, our officers detained him on March 18 and formally arrested him on Thursday after thorough questioning,” Sanjay Agrawal, DG, Intelligence, told the media.
In 2023 Khan travelled to Pakistan and the ISI got in touch with him. Agarwal said that the ISI lured him with money, and trained him later. He was in touch with his ISI handlers since and passed sensitive, confidential information about movement along from Jaisalmer’s border with Pakistan. It is believed that Khan used a range of secretive methods to share information.
Khan assumed the identity of farmer Ravi Kishan, claiming to own farmland in the Zero RD area of Noor-Ki-Chakki village, just next to the International Border that is patrolled by the Border Security Force (BSF).
Agarwal said that Khan was provided some SIM cards and he passed on information through social media. He received constant payment through various sources. It is suspected that he clicked photographs and videos of the movements of security forces along the border and their installations. These photographs and videos were then shared with the ISI.
Khan has been charged under the Official Secrets Act, 1923. Officials say that more arrests are possible as the investigation progresses. Several agencies have now come together to piece together the whole sequence of events and find out how much damage Khan may have caused.
