Islamabad/Washington: In a move that was anticipated, Pakistan has nominated US president Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. In its nomination, Pakistan has cited his “diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership” during the recent India-Pakistan conflict.
“Government of Pakistan Recommends President Donald J. Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Government of Pakistan has decided to formally recommend President Donald J. Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of his decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis,” the Pakistani government posted on its official X handle.
The four-day long conflict began on May 7 after India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 that left 26 persons, mostly tourists from across the country, dead.
On May 7, India carried out precision strikes on nine terror facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). Pakistan retaliated by launching missiles and drones at civilian and military targets in India, most of which were intercepted. On May 10, India carried out missile strikes on several Pakistani air bases and within hours, the DGMO of Pakistan was on the hotline with his Indian counterpart, seeking a ceasefire.
Trump had then claimed that it was his intervention that led to the ceasefire between the two countries, something that India has denied.
The nomination came shortly after Trump hosted Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir at the White House on Wednesday. Munir had earlier spoken about Trump’s Nobel nomination, crediting him with averting a potential nuclear confrontation between India and Pakistan.
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly had also confirmed before the meeting that “Trump would host Munir after he called for the president to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for preventing a nuclear war between India and Pakistan.”
According to Dawn, Pakistani officials are presenting the Munir’s invitation to the White House as a major diplomatic success.
India has always rebutted the theory of the conflict escalating into a nuclear war and asserted that its strong military response forced Pakistan to call for a halt to the conflict. On Friday, Pakistan’s deputy prime minister Ishaq Dar also said that his country sought a ceasefire after India struck the Nur Khan and Rafiqui air bases.
