The orange warning continues for two more days.

On July 2, heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh. Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/ lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Deogarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal and Bargarh.

On July 3, there is a heavy to very heavy rain warning for Jharsuguda. Heavy rain may also occur at one or two places in Bargarh, Nuapada and Balangir.

There is likely to be a gradual decrease in the intensity of rain thereafter. Heavy rain may occur at one or two places in Bargarh, Balangir, Sonepur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda on July 4 and Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar on July 5.

There is no warning on July 6-7 when light to moderate rain or thundershower may occur at many places in the state. The intensity of rainfall may again increase from July 8, it added.

While Odisha received 17 per cent excess rainfall in June, more showers are likely in the month of July too. The IM in its monthly outlook for rainfall issued on Monday said that the state is likely to receive above normal rains this month. “There is a high chance of heavy rainfall in east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, adjoining areas of Vidarbha and Telangana and parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra this month. Our models show a high probability of above-normal rainfall in the upper Mahanadi catchment areas, which includes Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh,” MD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told a presser, while advising the state government to monitor the situation.
