Surrey (Canada): A Khalistani terrorist linked to the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International has claimed responsibility for firing attack on comedian Kapil Sharma’s recently opened Kap’s Café in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. The Khalistani terror group alleged that Sharma’s comedy show had mocked Nihang Sikhs.

Babbar Khalsa group had carried out the bombing of Air India 182 in 1985

On June 23, 1985, the Air India Boeing 747, named after the Kushan dynasty emperor Kanishka, took off from Toronto for a journey that was scheduled to include stops at Montreal’s Mirabel airport, London’s Heathrow, Delhi’s Palam and Bombay’s Sahar. After the flight number 182 arrived in Montreal, more passengers boarded to make for full complement of 329, including 22 crew members, the Hindustan Times had reported.

The plane departed for England for the next leg. It made contact with the Shannon Air Traffic Control Center, but five minutes later, vanished off the radar screen. A bomb, sent via Vancouver, placed in cargo had exploded. Remnants of the plane were found off the Irish coast. There were no survivors. The attack had been attributed mainly to the terrorist outfit Babbar Khalsa, while the Canadian Commission of Inquiry also mentioned the International Sikh Youth Federation. According to a Times Now TV broadcast, the same group is behind the Kapil Sharma cafe attack.

Why was Kapil’s cafe attacked?

Harjit Singh alias Laddi, a known terrorist, claimed in a video message on social media that he and another individual named Toofan Singh carried out the shooting. Laddi, who is wanted in India with a bounty of ₹10 lakh on his head, said the motive behind the attack was a skit on The Kapil Sharma Show that allegedly disrespected Nihang Sikhs. He stated that repeated requests for an apology had gone unanswered.

“A character was seen wearing the Nihang Sikh attire and some humorous remarks were made on their conduct. These were considered to be offensive and hurt the religious sentiments of the community. No religion or spiritual identity can be mocked under the guise of comedy,” the Khalistani terrorist said. Nihang Sikhs are a distinctive and traditionalist martial order within Sikhism, known for their distinctive blue attire, traditional weapons.

The attack occurred at the newly inaugurated café located in Surrey, co-owned by Kapil Sharma and his wife. The incident did not result in any injuries but has raised serious concerns about the safety of Indian-origin business owners in Canada.

Babbar Khalsa International, the group Laddi is associated with, is a designated terrorist organization in several countries, including India and Canada. Authorities in Surrey have initiated an investigation into the incident.

Mumbai Police at Kapil Sharma’s residence

Meanwhile, a team of Mumbai Police has reportedly reached Kapil Sharma’s residence in Mumbai to record his statement. “We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversations. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock but we are not giving up,” a statement issued by the cafe reads.
