Bhubaneswar: Odisha may continue to experience heavy rain and thunderstorm activity till July 16, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.

It further stated that the trough from southeast Rajasthan to North Odisha across north Madhya Pradesh & north Chhattisgarh, cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand & neighbourhood has become less marked.

Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Balangir, Bargarh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Koraput, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Cuttack.

The thunderstorm, lightning and strong winds warning continues for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Nuapada and Koraput districts on July 12.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may resume at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur on July 13. There is also a warning of thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri on this day.

On July 14, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may continue at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Deogarh. Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Bargarh, Angul and Dhenkanal.

The intensity of rain may decrease thereafter. Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph warning has been issued for only Mayurbhanj on July 15. Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may continue at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur and Nuapada.

The weather agency has warned of heavy rain at one or two places across the state on July 16. Though there is no warning thereafter, light to moderate rain or thundershower may continue at a few places in Odisha.

According to the extended range forecast of the IMD, light to moderate rainfall may continue in the state till July 24. There is a low to moderate probability of cyclogenesis over the land region, covering east India and adjoining Gangetic plains, during week 1 (July 11-18). However, another fresh cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over northwest Bay of Bengal around July 18.

“As per IMD GFS and Bharat Forecast System (BFS) there is a likely development of another upper-air cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh around July 18. But NCEP-GFS and ECMWF indicate the development of the upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast during the beginning of week 2 (July 18-24). It is likely to move west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal & adjoining north Odisha, Jharkhand and east Madhya Pradesh during the later part of week 2,” it added.
