New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the partition in 1947 was a tragic chapter as the country observed August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

In a post on ‘X’, the PM wrote:“… remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history. It is also a day to honour their grit…their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh.”

India observes #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history. It is also a day to honour their grit…their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh.…

The PM also remembered those affected persons, who went on to rebuild their lives and achieve remarkable milestones. “This day is also a reminder of our enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold our country together”, he added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to people who lost their lives during the partition. “On this day the Congress by dividing the country inflicted injury on Mother India’s pride”, he wrote.

He said people suffered death and displacement due to the partition.

Several senior leaders and ministers also paid tributes. “The Partition caused immense suffering and had far-reaching human and strategic consequences. On #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, we recall the resilience of those who endured this terrible tragedy. There are many lessons to be learnt from this painful chapter,” S Jaishankar, Union minister for external affairs wrote on X.

Taking to his X handle, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi wrote: “#PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay teaches us the importance of prioritising national unity and pride for our motherland. This day is not merely an ordinary occasion but an opportunity to recall the dark chapter of our history when the British and certain vested interests, driven by their political ambitions, divided our Bharat Mata into pieces. The partition of 1947 left millions of brothers and sisters homeless, countless families shattered, and thousands of innocent lives lost solely based on religion. Today’s India has been built on their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering resolve. On this Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, we honour their struggle and sacrifice with heartfelt tributes.”

The CM further stated that the BJP government under the leadership of Modi is not only commemorating this history but also actively correcting past injustices. “By revoking Article 370 in Kashmir, the dream of “One Nation, One Constitution, One Flag” has been realised. Whether at our borders or on the global stage, India today stands firm in its integrity and sovereignty, responding decisively to aggressors. As we remember the sacrifices of our ancestors on this Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, the new India salutes their courage and determination,” he added.

In 2023, the PM declared that August 14 will be observed as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.’ The day reminds the nation of the sufferings and sacrifices of Indians during the partition.
