Kathua: A devastating cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district has claimed the lives of at least seven people, including five children, as flash floods inundated villages and wreaked havoc in the region. Dramatic rescue operations, captured in heart-wrenching videos circulating on social media, are ongoing as authorities scramble to recover bodies and provide aid to the affected families.

The cloudburst struck early this morning, triggering flash floods that swept through the area, destroying homes, roads, and vehicles in its path. The region, which has been grappling with heavy rains in recent days, saw rapid devastation as torrents of water surged through residential areas.

Disturbing Social Media Videos Capture Desperate Rescue Efforts

Social media videos have brought the gravity of the situation to light, showing dramatic scenes of villagers and rescue teams battling powerful floodwaters to save those trapped. One video shows a group of locals using ropes to pull a young girl from the swollen river, while another depicts rescue teams struggling to navigate through the debris-filled waters. The rescue footage, which has shocked viewers, underscores the perilous conditions on the ground.

Omar Abdullah Condemns Tragedy

Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and offered condolences to the grieving families. In a tweet, he wrote: “Heartbreaking news from Kathua. A cloudburst has led to flash floods, taking lives, including young children. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. I assure that rescue and relief operations are in full swing to help those affected.” Abdullah also assured the public that the administration was working round the clock to provide aid to the affected areas.

Casualties and Aftermath

The flash floods have killed at least seven people, including five children, with more feared dead as rescue operations continue. The children were reportedly playing near their homes when the floodwaters struck. Many homes have been completely destroyed, and roads leading to the affected areas have been cut off, hampering relief efforts.

While the rescue teams are working tirelessly, there is still a significant risk of more casualties as flash floods remain a threat in the region. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has warned of the possibility of further cloudbursts and advised residents to stay alert and avoid flood-prone areas.

Ongoing Rescue and Relief Operations

The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA), along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), has been deployed to assist in the rescue operations. Helicopters are being used for aerial surveillance and to deliver essential supplies to the affected areas. Medical teams have been sent to treat the injured, and shelters are being set up for displaced people.

However, access to the worst-hit regions remains challenging due to washed-out roads and landslides, complicating relief efforts.
