Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity till August 26, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.
While a cyclonic circulation now lies over north Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, the monsoon trough is running through Jaisalmer, Kota, Datia, Sidhi, Ranchi, Bankura, Digha and thence southeastwards to eastcentral Bay of Bengal, according to the midday bulletin.
Under the influence of these systeams, the districts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Sambalpur are likely to witness heavy rainfall, thunderstorm, lightning and gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30 kmph to 40 kmph on August 21..
Thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
The intensity of rain is likely to increase on August 22 with an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph issued for Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Cuttack. Heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur in Jajpur, Khurda, Puri, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Dhenkanal districts.
There is also a yellow warning of thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
On August 23, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may continue at one or two places in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur. Thunderstorms along with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Bargarh, Deogarh, Angul and Dhenkanal.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea from August 21-23 when squally weather with wind speed of 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph may prevail along and off North Odisha coasts.
On August 24, there is a yellow warning of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Bargarh districts. Thunderstorm along with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Khurda, Nayagarh and Puri.
Parts of Odisha may receive very heavy rainfall during the next two days.
On August 25, heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Bhadrak districts. Heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurda and Puri. Thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely in Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati,Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, , ,Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
On August 26, heavy to very heavy rain may lash one or two places in Kalahandi and Kandhamal. Heavy rainfall may also occur at one or two places in Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Koraput, Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Nabarangpur and Boudh districts.
Light to moderate rain may continue at many places across the state during the subsequent 4 days, it added.
