Sambalpur: A Class IX girl was rescued by Fire Service personnel hours after she jumped into the Mahanadi off Chaurapur bridge in Odisha’s Sambalpur in the early hours of Sunday.
The girl, identified as Arita Bisi, was found about 2 km away near Gobindtola bridge and later rushed to district headquarters hospital here. Her condition is stated to be stable.
Eyewitness said that the girl arrived at the bridge on her bicycle at around 5.30 am with a school bag and jumped into the swollen river. Besides books, a mobile phone and a phenyl bottle were also found in it.
Sources said that she was studying at Budharaja High School while staying with her relatives. She had got free admission in the school and was provided with free books and study materials as she was an orphan, Headmistress Subhrata Pati said.
Police have seized her belongings and are investigating the circumstances leading to the incident.
