Jammu: Severe monsoon rains continue to cause devastation across India. The Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir has not been spared either.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the Union Territory.

Jammu has been especially hard hit, as incessant rainfall triggered landslides and flash floods on Tuesday, blocking roads, washing away bridges and pushing rivers close to danger levels.

The Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra has been suspended till further notice following a landslide on the route, which left 7 people dead and many injured.

“A landslide incident has occurred near Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari, some injuries are feared. Rescue operations are underway along with required manpower and machinery,” the shrine’s board posted on X.

The landslide hit at a point halfway along the 12-km trek route to the hilltop shrine at around 3 pm.

In Doda district, at least four people have been killed, and several properties damaged. According to officials, three people died after their houses collapsed, and two others lost their lives in flash floods.

Water levels in major rivers like Chenab, Tawi and Ravi are rising, some of them above the danger mark.

The district administration has directed people to stay away from riverbanks and remain alert.

The School Education department has ordered closure of all government and private schools in Jammu Division on August 27 because of the prevailing inclement weather conditions and flood-like situation at various places.

Photos and videos showing severe flooding and widespread damage are flooding social media.

Traffic on NH-244, which connects Doda and Kishtwar, has been halted after a stretch of the road was washed away because of heavy rain, landslides and shooting stones.

Shooting stones in Ramban district have caused temporary closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway (NH-44).

The Sinthan Top pass, connecting Kashmir Valley with Kishtwar district, has been closed.

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held a high-level meeting on flood preparedness in the UT.

He the situation in many parts of Jammu is ‘quite serious’.

“I’ll be taking the next available flight from Srinagar to Jammu to personally monitor the developing situation. In the meantime, instructions have been issued to place additional funds at the disposal of the DCs to cover emergency restoration work and other exigencies,” Omar posted on X.

The administration has set up helplines in all affected districts.
