Bhubaneswar: With the monsoon trough passing though Bhawanipatna, Gopalpur and east-southeastwards to central Bay of Bengal, heavy rain may resume in Odisha from August 31, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Saturday.
The weather agency has warned of thunderstorm/lightning along with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati on August 30.
Heavy rain may resume on August 31 and continue till September 3.
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may lash one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada districts on August 31.
Similar weather condition may prevail at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj,Sundargarh, Ganjam, Gajapati and Nabarangpur on September 1; Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Malkangiri, Koraput and Ganjam on September 2, and Sundargarh, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Nabarangpur on September 3.
Thunderstorm/lightning along with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur on these three days.
A fresh low-pressure area is also likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal around September 3. “Thereafter, the system is likely to move west-northwestwards across the northwest Bay of Bengal, the coastal areas of West Bengal and North Odisha, and intensify into a depression around September 5. Accordingly, the monsoon trough is likely to remain south of its normal position during the entire week of August 29 to September 4,” the national forecaster said in its extended weather outlook on Thursday.
