Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday and many parts of Odisha are likely to be battered by heavy to very heavy rain over the next four days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the system is likely to become more marked during the next 24 hours and move across Odisha during the subsequent 24 hours.
Under the influence of the upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Myanmar coast, a low-pressure area has formed over Northwest Bay of Bengal at 5.30 am on Tuesday, it said.
“It is likely to become more marked over the same region during next 24 hours. It will move west-north-westwards thereafter across Odisha during the subsequent 24 hours,” the weather agency said.
Rainfall activity across Odisha is likely to increase in the coming days under its influence. While many areas are already experiencing showers of varied intensity, the IMD has forecast widespread rain across the state for the next five days.
In next 24 hours, an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph has been issued for the districts of Malkangiri, and Koraput.
Yellow warning was issued for the districts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, and Nuapada during the period.
Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Balangir, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj,Sonepur, and Boudh.
On Sept 3-4, an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was issued for Nabarangpur.
Similarly, heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind may occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Sundargarh, Bargarh, and Jharsuguda. Yellow warning was issued for these districts.
