Bhubaneswar: The 56th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is slated to begin in New Delhi on Wednesday. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will preside over the two-day meeting.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who is on a four-day visit to Delhi, is scheduled to attend the meeting as a member of the Council as he also holds finance portfolio in the state.
Officials said the meeting will focus on improving GST administration and addressing various demands raised by participating states.
CM Majhi is expected to present Odisha’s proposals and concerns, including measures for smoother GST implementation and revenue optimisation.
The GST Council, comprising finance ministers from all states and union territories, serves as the apex decision-making body for indirect taxation in India. The 56th session is likely to deliberate on compliance simplification, rate rationalisation, and digital integration of tax systems.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, the Chief Minister attended the SEMICON India 2025 conclave, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Yashobhoomi in the national capital.
The CM participating in the SEMICON India conclave assumes significance in the backdrop of the recent approval of Union cabinet of two semiconductor manufacturing units for Odisha.
