Berhampur: In a rare surgery, doctors at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Berhampur successfully removed a 23-centimeter-long teeth-cleaning twig (danta kathi) lodged in the food pipe of a 70-year-old man.
Sources said the challenging surgery was led by Dr Sanjit Kumar Mishra, Head of the ENT Department.
The patient, identified as Kamaraju Nayak of Netanga village under Bellaguntha block of Ganjam district, reportedly swallowed the twig accidentally while brushing his teeth last Wednesday. Initially, his family members dismissed his complaints. However, when faced difficulty in eating and daily activities, he was taken to Bhanjanagar Community Health Centre (CHC).
Nayak survived only on liquid food for w week as he could not swallow solid meals. When doctors at Bhanjanagar failed to treat him, his family admitted him to MKCG Hospital’s ENT department on Tuesday.
After thorough examination under Dr Mishra’s supervision, the presence of a twig in Nayak’s oesophagus was confirmed. A surgical team at MKCG hospital performed the surgery on Wednesday morning and successfully extracted the foreign object. The patient is currently stable and under close observation.
