Mumbai: India’s emphatic victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai has been followed not just by celebrations, but by sharp words from India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, directed at veteran cricketer Irfan Pathan.

Gambhir used the post-match platform to deliver what many are calling a ‘lesson in honesty’— a message he clearly intended for Pathan, among others.

Gambhir urges honesty after IND vs PAK win

During a television appearance on the Sony Sports Network soon after India’s triumph, Gambhir was asked to reflect on his team’s performance. While doing so, he did not hesitate to bring in the topic of integrity — specifically emphasising the need for honesty in every facet of Indian cricket. Though he didn’t explicitly take names at first, his comments seemed pointed.

He said that being honest in the dressing room is vital because it makes teamwork smoother, especially in times when the team is in a transition phase.

Gambhir, however, added that honesty shouldn’t just be reserved for players in the dressing room, but must also extend to the commentary box, studio discussions, and every public arena.

A thinly veiled call-out to Irfan Pathan

Though Gambhir did not directly name Irfan Pathan in his remarks, he later added a thank you and an appeal — words that make it very clear he was speaking with the former fast bowler in mind.

Some of Pathan’s past commentary or studio statements may have prompted Gambhir’s call for greater honesty.

Gambhir metaphorically said, “You can only compare orange to orange — not orange to apple,” hinting that fair comparisons and integrity are needed especially when criticism or commentary is involved.

The wider context

India’s recent win over Pakistan was a significant boost in their Asia Cup campaign. In moments like these — victory, momentum, scrutiny — expectations are high not just on performance, but on those who commentate and analyse from the studio.

Former cricketers like Pathan carry influence over public opinion, and Gambhir’s message suggests that with that influence comes responsibility.

The coach has been keenly focused on maintaining a stable environment, especially as team changes and experiments continue. A strong dressing-room culture, including trust and honesty, is something he seems to value especially during transitional phases.
