Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly plunged into turmoil on the third day of the monsoon session on Saturday with opposition members creating uproar over fertiliser shortage.
Amid chaotic scenes, the House was adjourned till 4 pm a few minutes after it assembled for the day.
As the day’s proceedings commenced, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi moved a condolence motion on the demise of veteran tribal leader and former Biramitrapur MLA George Tirkey. Supporting the motion, opposition leaders Prasanna Acharya (BJD), Rama Chandra Kadam (Congress) and Laxman Munda (CPI-M) paid tributes to the departed leader. Speaker Surama Padhy also offered condolences, and the House observed silence for two minutes in his memory.
Thereafter, the question hour business commenced and Works, Law and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan was about to speak when members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) were on their feet raising the fertiliser supply issur.
The BJD legislators trooped into the well of the House amid noisy scenes alleging acute fertiliser crisis in the state. Holding placards, they raised slogans against the BJP government, disrupting proceedings in the Houes.
Despite repeated appeals by the Speaker for restoration of normalcy and decorum, the BJD legislators continued noisy protest. As uproarious scenes continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 4 pm.
